258 passengers stranded in Caticlan due to Seniang

At least 258 passengers were stranded at the Caticlan Jetty Port because of tropical storm Seniang.

Lt. Jimmy Oliver Vingno,PCG-Caticlan Commander said that all of the passengers were either bound to Mindoro or Batangas provinces. They were supposed to ride a boat via the roll-on-roll off (Ro-Ro) vessel.

The PCG has temporarily suspended the operation of the roro as the weather agency has placed Aklan province, including Boracay, under storm signal number 1.

Vingno said boat operations from Caticlan to Boracay and vice versa were given a green light as thousands of tourists arrived. Both foreign and local tourists are arriving in groups in Boracay to celebrate New Year.

"But boat operation to Boracay will be suspended at 6 p.m. due to anticipated poor visibility. Boat operation may resume the next day (Thursday) depending on the weather situation," said Vingno.

Report from the Caticlan Jetty Port administrator said that as of Dec. 27, 1,363,601 foreign and local tourists already visited this resort island for this year.

Artist to exhibit collection in APEC 2015 meeting

An Aklanon artist is currently preparing to exhibit her artistic collection in this resort island during the second meeting of senior officials of the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) in April or May next year.

Erlinda Quimpo Wilson said she is already getting in touch with several resorts here as possible venues for her exhibit.

“Negotiations are still underway. Right now I am preparing for the great exhibit,” said Wilson.

Wilson said she considers the year 2015 as one of her lucky years as she also encouraged other local artists to also showcase their talents. Wilson is the chairman of the Aklan Arts Council.

Last October 2014, Wilson showcased her paintings at the GSIS Museum in Metro Manila. She also said she already received invitations to hold separate solo exhibits at the National Culture on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 2015.

One of the most favorite paintings of Quimpo is her impression painting of the old Boracay. She also loves to paint artworks emphasizing messages of tranquility, serenity and peace of mind.

"Art appreciation usually depends on the eye of the beholder. But there is a need to appreciate artworks because it encourages artists to do more," she said.

Most of the visual artist in Aklan are also inspired by the Amorsolo artworks featuring the ordinary lifestyle of the Filipinos.

Quimpo learned her craft in high school and underwent formal arts training in California, USA.

For several years, Aklan visual artists took a backseat in the national arena as many of the artists in the province are discreet in exhibiting their paintings.

"Right now, aside from me, there are Aklanons who are also starting in showing their artworks in Manila," said Wilson.

Thousands of both foreign and local officials and guests are expected to attend the second APEC senior officials meeting here. The first APEC senior officials meeting is slated last week of January 2015 in Clark, Pampanga.

Boracay ranked 13th on Agoda.com, considered as Asia’s leading hotel-booking website, garnering 2.49 percent of the votes gathered during the site’s current Travel Smart online survey.
In the survey conducted in November, Agoda.com asked more than 7,000 travelers to pick from among 24 destinations where they would like to celebrate the New Year.
Bangkok ranked first with 13.6 percent. It was followed by Hong Kong; Bali, Indonesia; Tokyo, Japan; and Singapore.

Most of them have already secured a clearance for the annual activity, Fire Inspector Stephen Jardeleza said over Bombo Radyo Kalibo.
Starting Dec. 31, BFP will inspect the receptacles of the firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices that the hotels and resorts will use, Jardeleza said.
The BFP, meanwhile, warned the public that sky lanterns could cause fire.

Crime of Oppurtunity

Incidents of snatching in this resort island is being considered a “crime of opportunity.”
Foreign tourists are the common victims, said Senior Inspector Mark Evan Salvo, Boracay police chief.
His office conducted a study and found out that snatching is the most rampant crime in Boracay, said Salvo.
Foreigners mostly complain of their wallets and electronic gadgets such as cell phones, tablets, music players and digital cameras being stolen.
“We have arrested some suspects. We found out that many of them did not have criminal records. This made us conclude that snatching here is more of a crime of opportunity – that is, it happens because there is an opportunity for the culprit to do so.
Among the foreigners, the most common victims were the Chinese, Korean and European tourists, said Salvo.
His office, however could not provide specific numbers of victims.
Most of the complainants do not pursue charges after having recovered their stolen valuables, he explained.
To deter snatchers, the Boracay police has enhanced its visibility.
“We always remind tourists, too, to be vigilant,” said Salvo.

One of the ways to do this is to use recyclable materials in making Christmas decorations, said Fr. Arnold Crisostomo, parish priest.
“Catholic residents in Boracay would always try to show tourists our tradition every Christmas. We should show them our simplicity and faith,” said Crisostomo.
Malay’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office is undertaking a “recycled Christmas lantern” initiative.
Crisostomo is encouraging the public to support this initiative.
Through this, the local government shows not only simplicity but also a way to conserve Boracay’s environment, said the priest.

‘Declare Boracay protected area’

Environment officials are “eager” to support the proposal to declare this island resort a protected area.
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, however, will have to look into the proposal first, said its chief, Ivene Reyes.
The Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative (SPC) has called for the declaration of the beachfront as a protected area.
But “right now we have no details of the proposal,” said Reyes. “We are eager to cooperate with the municipal government of Malay and SPC to declare the beachfront a protected area.”
SPC’s Jose Rodriguez earlier said Boracay needs to be declared such amid its rapidly growing tourism industry.
“We have observed that a huge area of corals at the beachfront is threatened,” he said. “We can only save the corals if the beachfront is declared a protected area.”/

New moratorium policy up in Boracay

The local government of Malay has imposed a new moratorium policy for new buildings along the main road of Boracay.

This developed after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in cooperation with the local government lifted the moratorium of construction in the entire Boracay effective October 1, 2014.

Malay Mayor John Yap said that he has to sign Executive Order Number 25, Series of 2014 for moratorium on new constructions at the main road within 15 meters from the center line on both sides.

"The earlier Proclamation 1064 of the DENR providing 15 meters from the center line is in conflict with the Municipal Ordinance 131 of the local government. It is but proper to temporarily stay building constructions along the cited area (main road) until such conflict is resolved," Yap said.

The Municipal Ordinance 131 of LGU-Malay only provides the main road must be six meters from the center line.

To implement the new moratorium policy, Yap tasked the Boracay Redevelopment Task Force to monitor the main road for possible new constructions. It was not stated in the executive order the possible penalties for those who violate the moratorium policy.

Uniformed dress code for guards pushed

Security agencies here were ordered to have a uniformed dress code for all their personnel.
Security guard uniforms vary in every agency, noted Superintendent Conrado Carganillo, chief of the Regional Operations and Plans Division–Security Agencies and Guards Unit (ROPD-SAGU) of the Police Regional Office 6.
But “some wear uniforms similar to those of the tourist police, while others wear Barong Tagalog,” Carganillo said. “It is best for security agencies to have a uniformed dress code for easy identification.”
Carganillo said the ROPD-SAGU gave the security agencies here three months to come up with a new dress code.
ROPD-SAGU met with security agencies here as part of the security preparations for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit next year.
Boracay will host APEC ministerial meetings on trade and economy.

Vietnam company wants to convert wastes to electricity in Boracay

A company based in Vietnam has proposed converting wastes to electricity for use in this resort island.

Neil Agustin, a Filipino and president of the El Elyon-Orion Global Renewable Energy Resource Development Corporation, said they are willing to shoulder all the cost needed for the operation.

"In Vietnam, we have nearly perfected the technology and we wanted to introduce our technology for Boracay at no cost for the local government," said Agustin during his presentation at the local council here.

The company uses a combination of technology for the different wastes. Tin cans are being converted into ore, trees into coal and into renewable energy.

"The said company requires a 100 metric tons of wastes. We know that Boracay is only producing 51 metric tons of wastes at its peak. We may seek other nearby towns in Boracay to fill the gap," said Agustin.

The Sanguniang Bayan of Malay has requested a feasibility study to ensure the successful operation of the proposed power plant.

Agustin said they wanted to put up investments in this resort island as showcase for their success story on sustainable waste management.

It was learned that several US based companies has earlier proposed to put up an Independent Power Producer in this resort island. The Vietnam-based company is so far the first Asian firm that has expressed intention to put up a power plant here.

TIEZA to address flooding before APEC

The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) has expressed commitment to finish their drainage infrastructure project before the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in April 2015.

Representing TIEZA, Engineer Giovanni Rullan said that it is a huge undertaking but it is their duty to work on it.

The absence of drainage system in this resort island has been blamed for flooding woes during heavy rains. These turnoff tourists coming to Boracay.

"We will be coordinating with the Boracay Redevelopment Task Force, Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in this endeavor," said Rullan.

Currently, the TIEZA needs to put up pipes connecting to the existing drainage at Bolabog beach before their drainage could be operational.

Meanwhile, the Boracxay Redevelopment Task Force said it will remove the wind and bamboo wave breakers before "amihan" comes.

Both the wind and wave breakers have been installed by the resorts in coordination with the task force to protect the beach area during "habagat" season.

Earlier, the Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) alerted the residents to prepare for the coming of the amihan season.

Chinese tourists continue to flock to Boracay

Chinese tourists still continue to flock Boracay despite the travel ban imposed by their government.

Niven Maquirang, jetty port administrator, said that Chinese tourists continue to be on the top three list of tourists who visited Boracay from January to September this year.

Experts urge protection of PHL coral reefs

A Filipina climate change expert urged local government officials and residents here to make an effort in protecting the Philippines' coral reefs.

In an interview, Dr. Rosa Perez, who is also the author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said a lot of Filipinos still do not know the importance of coral reefs.

Because of the global warming, it warms the sea water which causes an effect to the coral reefs. Perez said that at least 25 percent of the country's remaining coral reefs are already damaged.

"The local government including the residents and the fishermen should work hand in hand in coming up with a conscious effort in saving the coral reefs. The local government should also craft policies for the protection of the coral reefs," said Perez.

Coral reefs serve as habitat of many marine species especially fish.

For his part, Jose Rodriguez of the Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative (SPC), said coral reefs in Boracay are slowly being destroyed by the proliferation of the crown of thorns.

"Before, we thought the the problem on crown of thorns will be eradicated if the rainy season comes. However, crown of thorns are more persistent nowadays compared to previous years," he said.

Rodriguez said that among the contributing factors to the proliferation of the crown of thorns were climate change, high nutrient content of nitrogen and from the sewage septic tank as Boracay is entirely made of limestone. I also suspect storm sewage discharge and garbage dump seepage," said Rodriguez.

The SPC together with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and several volunteers have committed to manually conduct marine clean up against crown of thorns before the year ends.

Construction moratorium lifted in Boracay

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has lifted the moratorium of construction in world-famous beach destination of Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan.

Heherson Alvarez of the Aklan Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) said that the said move is in coordination with both the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the local government of Malay, Aklan.

“With this development, the DOT and the local government of Malay will clarify the roles of each agency,” said Alvarez.

Last year, the DENR implemented the moratorium order after the Aquino administration declared Boracay a critical habitat.

Since then, the government has enforced a series of demolitions of illegal structures along the white beach.

Meanwhile, DENR now requires residential areas to apply for a permit in constructing a new structure.

“This new system may eventually transform into the possibility of giving out land titles to the residents in the near future,” added Alvarez.

The Supreme Court has previously declared Boracay as a government property.

More Boracay dev’ts seen

More infrastructures are expected to rise here now that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has lifted the moratorium on new constructions.
A “new system” for the granting of construction permits, however, will be in place, an officer of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office said.
The DENR, Department of Tourism and the municipal government of Malay will meet this week to discuss plans in light of the construction freeze lift.
They will “clarify the agencies’ roles in the development of Boracay,” said forester Heherson Alvarez.
“In the past,” said Alvarez, also a representative of DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau in Aklan, “there had been misunderstandings with regard to our respective policies.”
Under the new system, he said, “DENR will require residential areas to apply for a permit if they want to construct a new building.”
Alvarez said this system may also eventually lead to the distribution of land titles to the residents but did not explain how.
DENR enforced the moratorium last year after the government declared Boracay a “critical habitat.”
The government has since demolished illegal structures at the beachfront.
Environmental advocates believe the demolitions helped the island resort’s ecology to recuperate from damage caused by constructions.
DENR lifted the moratorium last week./

No definite rule for Commercial Sea Planes in Boracay

There is no definite policy yet on the operation of commercial sea planes in this resort island.

Malay mayor John Yap said that he has already received notifications from the two different airline companies proposing for the operation of commercial sea planes.

"I already rejected one company because they are using an old sea plane. The other says they are using a modern technology and I have yet to see their presentation," said Yap.

The local government of Malay has rejected the operation of the sea planes because it may pollute the sea in this resort island.

Heherson Alvarez of the Aklan Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office said a thorough study is still needed in this resort island for the possible operation of commercial sea planes.

"If it is viable, we may also consider other nearby coastal areas for the possibility of the operation of commercial sea planes. A new zoning ordinance maybe required for it," Alvarez said.

Tourists using regular sunscreens destroy coral reefs in Boracay

The Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative (SPC) warns tourists coming to this resort island that it is destructive to corals if they use regular sunscreens on their skins.
Jose Rodriguez of the SPC said that they are only re-echoing the warning made by international conservationist as most regular sunscreens contain ingredients that are toxic to corals.
Earlier, the Amazons of the Oceans warned the Philippines that it is part of the so-called Coral Triangle. Aside from the Philippines, countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia are part of the Coral Triangle.
In his article, researcher Allard Marx said that although regular sunscreens protect us from harm it has titanium dioxide and zinc oxide react with UV light to create Hydrogen Peroxide, this can set off viral epidemics in the algae that coral polyps feed on.
"As the algae dies, the coral have nothing left to eat. Eventually it bleaches and dies too. This richochets up the food chain, affecting other creatures that rely on the reef for food, shelter and to spawn," the researcher said.
The Coral Triangle is considered as the underwater equivalent of the Amazons.
The Amazons of the Ocean said that at least ten percent of the corals in the three countries died due to massive use of most of the regular sunscreens by the tourists.
"I am all agree to the said study," Rodriguez said.

Boracay business group now offering discounts on hotels

The Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI) has supported the call of the Department of Tourism-Western Visayas to provide discount rates to both foreign and local tourists.
Dionisio Salme, BFI president, said that discounts however depend on their members.
"We see the initiative of the DoT in calling for discounted rates as good," said Salme.
The DoT has called for discounted rates following the declaration by the Chinese government of a travel ban to the Philippines. The travel ban caused the cancellation of reservations for Chinese tourists coming to Boracay.
Salme said the travel ban has greatly affected large hotels as they usually lure group tours. Small hotels still enjoy the influx of mostly local tourists and other nationalities such as Koreans and Taiwanese.
The BFI is a business organization in this resort island with more than 300 members.
Aside from the discounted rates in hotels, the DoT also called for discounted rates on airplanes.

Rare bead artifact found in Aklan

A rare type of bead has been found during the four-day archaeological digging inside two caves in Kalibo, Aklan.

National Museum Researcher Giovanni Bautista said the team found a piece of Carnelian bead, which is a semi-precious gem stone that is used as jewelry in India, Brazil, Siberia and Germany.

“What puzzles us is why a Carnelian bead has been found at the caves,” said Bautista, who led the three-man research team of the National Museum.

“The Chinese traders may have brought it here. Since we had only seen one piece, we believe they are still more of them that have to be unearthed,” added Bautista.

The National Museum team also found 15 kilos of teeth, earthen wares and other Chinese artifacts believed to trace back during the Ming Dynasty.

Bautista noted that the two caves of Tigayon Hill, which is the highest peak in Aklan, have different characteristics.

“The first cave may have been a burial site,” said Bautista as it is where the 15 kilos of human teeth were found.

“The second cave was where most artifacts were found including the ceramics,” he said.

With little time to explore the other caves, Bautista reiterated he will suggest to the National Museum to conduct more diggings at Tigayon Hill.

It was the local government of Kalibo that requested the National Museum to conduct archaeological excavation to provide more information that will boost its historical and cultural tourism.

APEC hosting to boost investments in Boracay

The Caticlan and Cagban Jetty Port in this resort island is confident that the forthcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) hosting would boost tourism investments.

"The Aklan Provincial Government is positive of the economic development that will come along with the hosting of the APEC. Preparations are now underway," he said.

For his part, Malay Councilor Rowen Aguirre said that they had already formed a task group for the APEC preparation.

"We do not have a timeline yet. We're still on the planning stage. We would provide details as soon as we are ready," said Aguirre who is the local APEC focal person for Boracay.

Archaeological artifacts unearthed in Aklan caves

Archaeological artifacts have been unearthed by a team from the National Museum inside two caves in Kalibo, Aklan.

“We have recovered human teeth, human bones, decorated earthen wares, and other fragments,” said National Museum researcher Giovanni Bautista.

The team has been conducting diggings since September 12 in two caves on the peak of Tigayon Hill in Aklan’s capital town which is known as a pilgrimage site for Catholics particularly during Holy Week.

“Based on initial observation, Tigayon Hill is a possible burial site during the pre-Hispanic era when the concept of cemetery burials was not practiced,” Bautista noted.

The team that also included Jose Santiago and Antonio Peñalosa found human teeth belonging to both adults and children.

Pieces of decorated earthen ware found could also support claims by local history buffs that Tigayon Hill, which is close to Aklan River, used to be a Chinese settlement site.

More than a decade ago, the Kalibo local government had requested the National Museum to conduct archaeological excavation at Tigayon Hill to boost historical and cultural tourism.

With the latest finding, Bautista is suggesting that more diggings be undertaken in over a dozen caves more in Tigayon Hill.

The National Museum would also like to find physical evidence tracing the history of Kalibo’s Ati-Atihan festival which is dubbed as the country’s mother of all festivals.

The festival basically depicts the Barter of Panay, which tells the story of 10 Bornean datus settling on Panay Island, including what is now known as the province of Aklan, and trading land with the native Atis or Aetas.

To date, there is no hard archaeological evidence that can definitively substantiate the historicity of the so-called Barter of Panay.

‘Boracay country’s economic driver’

Its huge contribution to the country’s tourism industry, among others, makes this island resort a “great economic driver,” said Rep. Teodorico Haresco Jr.
In 2013, Western Visayas put in some P3.6 billion in the Philippine economy, about P2.4 billion of which came from Aklan, including Boracay, Haresco said.
“Aside from this, Aklan and Boracay also source food from other provinces,” transported via the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, said the congressman.
The provincial government is currently negotiating with the Department of Budget and Management for the allocation of at least 20 percent of its contribution to boost the island resort’s tourism.
For her part, Department of Tourism regional director Helen Catalbas cited the importance of locally produced food.
Enabling local communities to produce more food “will further decrease food prices in this island resort,” Catalbas said. Lower food prices will “lure more tourists to Boracay,” she stressed./

DOT confident Boracay could accommodate five million tourists

The Department of Tourism (DOT)is confident that this resort island could achieve the five million tourists goal in a year if there's proper infrastructures and political will in place.

Atty. Helen Catalbas, DoT regional director, said that based on her computation in order to reach five million tourists, Boracay should accommodate around 13, 800 tourists on daily basis.

"Tourists just come and go. To reach the goal, the stakeholders and the local government unit should join together to ensure environmental sustainability in this resort island," said Catalbas Friday.

Aside from environmental sustainability, traffic should not also be a problem if the stakeholders cooperate well with the government.

The Aklan Provincial Government is targeting 1.75 million tourists by 2015. The year 2015 is considered as the busiest year for this resort island because of the expected heavy influx of tourists brought about by the hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Conference.

Coop sets November for massive traditional collection of crown of thorns

The Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative (SPC) in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has scheduled the month of November for a massive manual gathering of the crown of thorns.

The crown of thorns belongs to a star fish specie that feeds on corals in this resort island.

In a phone interview, Virna Salac of the DOST Central Office said that the November event will also be supported by the Boracay Association of Divers, Globe Telecom and volunteers coming from the Universities of Bohol, Pangasinan and in Mindanao.

The SPC came up with the November plan after conducting consultations together with the DOST Officials in Central Office Wednesday.

"Currently, the problem of crown of thorns in Boracay is manageable. The DOST is supporting the SPC on their thrust as we do not want the problem (crown of thorns) to reach an alarming level," said Salac.

The DOST has earlier tapped the services of the SPC with its series of 'Filipinovation' projects all over the country.

"While right now, the SPC plans to collect the crown of thorns manually, the DOST is studying available scientific means on how to eradicate the problem of crown on thorns," said Salac.

The SPC earlier maintained that they should help in eradicating the problem on crown of thorns visibly seen in Boracay underwater in order to protect the coral reefs.

The coral reefs served as a habitat of marine lives especially on this resort island.

"The Pook Port will serve as a new transport medium for tourists bound for Boracay. It is only a few meters away from the Kalibo International Airport (KIA)," said Niven Maquirang, Caticlan Jetty port administrator.

He added that the completion of the seaport is being rushed for the Asia Pacific Economic Conference in May 2015.

The Aklan Provincial Government has opened up a new seaport in Barangay Pook, Kalibo to lure high paying tourists to board a boat from the KIA. The boat that will be known as "Catamaran' will shorten tourists' travel by about 30 minutes to one hour.

From the KIA, tourists will take at least two hours of combined land and sea travel just to reach Boracay Island.

"The Aklan Provincial Government is also opening new a seaport in Boracay purposely to minimize traffic at the resort island," said Maquirang.

Meanwhile, the Aklan Provincial Government is also coordinating with the Philippines Ports Authority to open a new seaport in Barangay Bugtong Bato, Ibajay.

The Ibajay Seaport is meant to accommodate roll on-roll off (Ro-Ro) boats coming from both Mindoro and Batangas. Currently, Ro-Ro passengers use the Caticlan Jetty Port for departure and arrival, which worsens the increasing traffic problems in Malay.

Boracay to be transformed into a cruise tourism destination -- Aklan solon

Aklan Congressman Teodorico Haresco said that this resort island is now being developed into a hot cruise ship tourism destination.

One of its scheduled development is the soon to be bidding of the Boracay highway with the Department of Public Works and Highways. The government has allocated P40 million for its improvement.

"We need to improve the Boracay roads in order to ease traffic in the area. Experts on cruise tourism said that the current traffic congestion in this resort island turns off the cruise tourism industry," said Haresco.

It was learned that the Boracay circumferential road has already been finished years ago. However, the one way traffic highway was not immediately implemented because the road was damaged due to changing weather.

Once the circumferential road is fixed, Haresco said he hopes that it would lure more cruise ships coming to Boracay.

Report said that for the year 2015, Boracay is anticipating the arrival of at least 12 cruise ships. Highest numbers of cruise ship arrivals are expected first half of the year 2015.

In the recent international cruise ships conferences, the Philippines has Manila, Palawan and Boracay Island as possible cruise ship highways in Asia.

DoT warns against illegitimate tourist guides in Boracay

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is warning against the proliferation of illegitimate tourists guides here.

Artemio Ticar of the DoT-Boracay said that the local government of Malay, Aklan has started its crackdown against illegitimate tourists guides who are preying specially on Chinese tourists.

Ticar said there are many illegitimate tourists guides, "many of whom were Chinese," who, he said, might discouraged the entry of more Chinese tourists from coming to Boracay.

"There are still Chinese tourists that are coming to Boracay but we do not expect it to be that huge in numbers. The local government of Malay is now doing everything to fix this problem," said Ticar in an interview Wednesday.

Based on the tourism arrivals for the month of June, around 9,812 Chinese tourists visited this resort island.

CATICLAN AIRPORT MANAGER RESIGNS

Godofredo P. Ramos Airport general manager Bong Tirol has announced his resignation amid speculations that he is running for public office.
Tirol said his decision to step down was in consultation with San Miguel Corp., which develops the airport.
Irma Mendiola, the deputy general manager, has temporarily taken over the airport management.
In a press conference Tuesday, Tirol said speculations on the possibility that he will join politics had been around for years.
“[But] right now, I could not comment on the said speculations since 2016 is still far,” he said.
He said Gov. Florencio Miraflores and Rep. Teodorico Haresco were his “close relatives.”
It was learned that the business community in Boracay had been encouraging Tirol to run for public office.
Tirol managed the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, more commonly known as Caticlan Airport, in Barangay Caticlan, Malay, Aklan for four years.
There were no reported major incidents at the airport during Tirol’s term.
“My secret is I managed the airport as a hotel,” he said. “I think my experience in managing hotels came out naturally while managing the airport.”
Tirol will now serve as a director of government affairs of Shangrila Hotel Boracay.
He said he also plans to organize a series of community projects in Malay.
San Miguel Corp. will appoint the next full-fledged general manager of the airport.
The airport, while small, is one of the busiest airports in the country, accommodating local and foreign tourists bound for Boracay.
San Miguel Corp. is currently developing it based on international standards, with an initial allocation of P2.5 billion./

Boracay priest thanks Aquino

A “downpour of blessings” happened in this island, thanks to the administration of President Benigno Aquino III, a parish priest here said.
The Aquino administration, especially the President himself, has helped a lot in boosting tourism here, said Fr. Arnaldo Crisostomo of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Barangay Balabag.
Crisostomo said the Aquino administration “had been largely instrumental in the arrest of the suspect in the killing of Ati spokesman Dexter Condez.”
Police collared Daniel Celestino, a security guard of a hotel here, in Barangay Palasan, Sta. Cruz, Laguna on March 5.
The Philippine National Police is under the Department of Interior and Local Government under Secretary Mar Roxas.
“The President, with the help of his sister, Viel, has also helped a lot in the establishment of the Ati village in Boracay,” said Crisostomo.
He said the Ati community in the island now live peacefully with the 24/7 protection that the local police provide.
Just this year, the indigenous peoples here were provided a certificate of ancestral domain title.
Also, the Department of Tourism and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources were grateful for Aquino’s executive order ensuring environmental sustainability here./

DOT: No let-up in tourism campaign for Boracay

The Department of Tourism (DOT) continues its intensified campaign in promoting Boracay even if it's already known as one of the best beaches in the world.

Aklan PDRRMC to stage Rescue Olympics

The Aklan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has slated July 25 this year for its Annual Rescue Olympics program.

Galo Ibardolaza, PDRRM office head, said Wednesday that the local Olympics will be participated by 17 municipal disaster risk reduction management offices and probably volunteer groups from Boracay Island.

This annual event is part of the highlight of the National Disaster Consciousness Month. The competition will be held at the ABL Sports Complex in Provincial Capitol, Kalibo, Aklan.

"Each of the rescue groups will face different tasks for us to determine who among them are the best rescue volunteers in the province," said Ibardolaza.

The Aklan Provincial Government is keen on the disaster management capability of the local volunteers as the province is anticipated to host the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) in 2015.

There will be stiff competition as Kalibo volunteers underwent full training on disaster management. Only the Kalibo town has a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) personnel.

However, the hinterland town of Madalag is also a favored participant since it is reportedly an expert in first aid.

Volunteers coming from Malay and Boracay Island are expected to also render high performance on disaster management. They will be at the front line once Boracay Island will be officially considered host of the APEC.

Drainage problems blamed for Boracay flooding

Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores has asked for an investigation on the flooding incident in this resort island during the weekend.

He said that he will bring the matter to the attention of the national task force on Boracay Redevelopment. The said task force was created by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III together with Baguio City officials to ensure environmental sustainability in two tourism areas.

The flooding in this resort island was caused by heavy monsoon rains intensified by typhoon Florita.

A huge part of the resort island went under waist-deep floodwater.

Boracay Redevelopment Task Force secretary Mabel Bacani said the local government of Malay has been receiving numerous complaints from both tourists, local residents and businessmen as a result of the said incident.

Based on the initial inspection conducted after the flood, the drainage system of the island was clogged by garbage.

Both the Boracay Foundation Incorporated and the Department of Tourism-Boracay also expressed disappointment over what is considered as the worst flooding incident on the resort island in recent history.

Illegal drugs trade in Boracay profitable - PNP

The illegal drugs trade in this resort island is profitable because of the growing tourism industry prompting police authorities to intensify its anti-drug campaign.

Data from the Aklan Provincial Police Office showed that from January to June 3 this year, at least 55 drug suspects have already been apprehended in 44 series of anti-drug operations.

This indicate that police has been arresting 2-3 suspects each week involving illegal drugs. Many of the suspects also carry with them firearms.

Intelligence officials who requested anonymity said that each gram of shabu in Boracay costs from P12,000-P15,000. In Metro Manila, a gram of shabu reportedly costs P8,000.

"One of the reasons we see is that the civilians were tempted to sell drugs because of its high-value. Nevertheless, we believe we are able to neutralize more than half of the illegal drugs trade in Boracay and in the province," said Supt. Samuel Nacion, provincial police director.

Most of the suspects came from Capiz province.

While there is no reported existence of a shabu laboratory in the province, the police said the drugs were being shipped to suspects via courier service companies.

Recently, police operatives have been able to confiscate drugs hidden inside the sole of a child's shoes. The said items were delivered by a courier service to an arrested drug suspect here.
