Boracay’s trash problem

With the number of tourists increasing annually, this world-famous resort island is facing a major garbage problem.

“No matter how strong our campaign is, tourists are still improperly throwing garbage,” lamented Boracay Island Administrator Rowen Aguirre.

He said garbage is one of the top problems confronting the administration of Mayor Ciceron Cawaling of Malay, to which Boracay belongs.

Recently, parents and teachers at the Manoc Manoc Elementary School complained that the stench from the nearby dump site has become so unbearable that it disrupted classes.

Aguirre said the Malay municipal government needs to acquire more deodorizers to curb the foul odor from the dump.

The trash collected all over the island is brought to the dump for segregation. Workers then spray the deodorizers on the garbage.

Boracay photo shoot for Miss Universe candidates

The rains failed to spoil the festive and jovial mood in the world famous Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, which hosted a photo shoot for 16 candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant yesterday.

Malay, Aklan Mayor Ciceron Cawaling and local Miss Universe organizer Luis “Chavit” Singson welcomed the 16 candidates at the Boracay Airport in mainland Malay.

Aklan Provincial Tourism Officer Roselle Ruiz said the candidates only stayed for five hours and left Boracay past 1 p.m. of yesterday.

Candidates from Australia, Myanmar, Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico, US Virgin Islands, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Namibia, Guyana, Belize, Malta, Turkey, and Poland took part in the photo shoot.

Security was tight prior to the arrival of the 16 Miss Universe candidates.

Aside from the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Coast Guard also beefed up security in and around the island.

APPO told be prepared for possible Miss Universe visit

The Aklan Provincial Police Office (APPO) was told to be ready for a possible 'last- minute' visit of the Miss Universe candidates.

SPO1 Nida Lachica-Gregas, public information officer of the APPO, said Friday that the Department of Tourism (DOT) asked them just to be ready just in case.

"Based on the advise, the Miss Universe candidates may visit the Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-atihan Festival on January 14. They will then proceed to Boracay for anther event," Gregas said.

The inclusion of Kalibo Ati-atihan and Boracay Island are not in the original itinerary of Miss Universe but the DoT is currently doing its best to bring Miss Universe in the province of Aklan.

In earlier interview, Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores said the Aklan provincial government is not keen on spending the hosting of a Miss Universe event.

"Our hands are already full as Boracay will play host to the golden anniversary of the ASEAN Summit in February," said Miraflores.

Aklan posts 93 HIV cases

There are now 93 cases of HIV infection in Aklan, the Provincial Health Office said.

Sixty-nine cases are asymptomatic (presenting no symptoms), according to Dr. Cornelio Cuachon, provincial health officer.

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, causes the still incurable AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Those who suspect to have HIV or AIDS should seek medical help as soon as possible, Cuachon said in an interview on Wednesday.

“They should be able to know it through their lifestyle,” he said.

The Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital, the provincial hospital on Mabini Street here, provides free HIV screening and treatment medication.

It is a Department of Health satellite HIV treatment hub in Western Visayas.

The Health department’s HIV treatment hub in Region 6 is the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

In the nearby Negros Island Region, it is the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital.

Boracay achieves tourist arrival target

This island resort continues to be a big-time tourist drawer.

After achieving its tourist arrival target for 2016, Boracay aims to accommodate 2 million tourists this year.

A total of 1,724,125 tourists flocked to the island from January to December 2016, records from the Caticlan jetty port showed.

Niven Maquirang, jetty port administrator, said they aimed to accommodate 1.7 million tourists that year.

Among foreign visitors, South Koreans had the most number with 292,869, followed by the Chinese with 259,439 and the Taiwanese, 53,208.

Rounding out the top 10 origins of foreign tourists were Malaysia (24,465), United States (21,274), Australia (14,883), United Kingdom (14,397), Australia (11,978), Russia (9,834), and Singapore (9,724), records showed.

Tourists from Singapore decreased more than half. In 2016, Singaporean visitors numbered 16,446.

And unlike in previous years, Japan did not make it in the top 10 foreign tourist markets. It was replaced by Australia.

Maquirang said they anticipate more tourists this year as Boracay hosts a series of meetings among diplomats during the 2017 Asean Summit.

“Boracay also remains a cruise ship destination in the Asia-Pacific,” said the jetty port administrator.

‘Wetlands key to potable water’

Environmental officials are studying how to best preserve the remaining wetlands in this island resort.

Research suggests that maintaining the wetlands is key to ensuring potable water, according to Merlene Aborka, Technical Services Section chief at the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.

“Some of the wetlands were damaged as a result of quick development,” said Aborka. “We have filed (appropriate) cases in court. They remain pending at this time.”

Protecting the wetlands cannot be done by the government alone, she said.

“We need the help of all stakeholders in ensuring the environmental sustainability of Boracay,” said Aborka. “But the problem is every stakeholder seems to have their own interpretation of how to save Boracay from environmental degradation.”

Meanwhile some locals said the white sand may be “degrading” due to the continuous arrival of tourists.

Around 1.7 million tourists have visited the island as of Dec. 27, 2016.

“Each tourist leaving Boracay carries in their sandals or shoes some of the white sand,” a resident who requested anonymity said. “Imagine how much of our white sand are disappearing yearly.”

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has not yet conducted a study on this.
