With the number of tourists increasing annually, this world-famous resort island is facing a major garbage problem.
“No matter how strong our campaign is, tourists are still improperly throwing garbage,” lamented Boracay Island Administrator Rowen Aguirre.
He said garbage is one of the top problems confronting the administration of Mayor Ciceron Cawaling of Malay, to which Boracay belongs.
Recently, parents and teachers at the Manoc Manoc Elementary School complained that the stench from the nearby dump site has become so unbearable that it disrupted classes.
Aguirre said the Malay municipal government needs to acquire more deodorizers to curb the foul odor from the dump.
The trash collected all over the island is brought to the dump for segregation. Workers then spray the deodorizers on the garbage.
