PHOENIX, Arizona — For many immigrants, the difficult task
of learning English is only part of their journey to integration. Certain
things remain challenging beyond formal fluency in the classroom: responding
confidently in job interviews, workplace meetings, parent-teacher conferences,
community events, and several others. Researchers have long distinguished
between language proficiency—knowing a language—and communication confidence,
the ability to express ideas comfortably under pressure and in unfamiliar
situations.[1][2]
For Jessica Natividad, a first-generation Filipina immigrant
living in Arizona, that distinction defined much of her life in the United
States through the years.
"I always had ideas," Natividad told Boracay
Island News. "The difficult part wasn't knowing English. It was expressing
myself and my ideas clearly and elegantly."
Today, Natividad regularly speaks before community
organizations, welcomes newly arrived Filipino
immigrants while supporting their transition into life in a new society,
and participates more actively in civic life. She says much of her newfound
confidence from that transformation came from Wellspoken: an AI-powered
communication coaching platform that helps users practice conversations,
interviews, presentations, storytelling, and public speaking through
personalized AI feedback.
What Is
an AI Communication Coach?
AI communication coaching is a growing category of
educational software that uses conversational artificial intelligence to help
users practice real-world communication in real-time, rather than simply
memorizing vocabulary or grammar. Users training on Wellspoken may rehearse
interviews, presentations, workplace conversations, storytelling, negotiations,
and public speaking while receiving personalized feedback.
Unlike traditional language-learning applications which
focus on language mechanics in an isolated setting, communication coaching
platforms focus on developing confidence, organization, clarity, and persuasive
speaking; all more narrowly applied in practical and important moments
throughout life.
Beyond
Learning English
Natividad immigrated from the Philippines more than three
decades ago.
Like many Filipino immigrants, English was never her
greatest obstacle. The Philippines recognizes English as one of its official
languages, and Filipino immigrants are among the most English-proficient
immigrant populations in the United States. According to the Migration Policy
Institute, only 29 percent of Filipino immigrants report speaking English less
than "very well," compared with 46 percent of immigrants overall.[3].
Being able to speak English more “natively” in the host society was cited as
the primary challenge.
Yet confidence remained elusive.
"I could communicate," Natividad said. "But
whenever I spoke with supervisors, teachers, or people I didn't know well, I
worried about sounding unprofessional or saying something incorrectly."
Communication researchers have found that even highly
proficient second-language speakers may experience anxiety during high-stakes
conversations, affecting participation, confidence, and performance
[1][2].
A
Different Kind of AI Learning
Traditional language-learning applications generally
emphasize vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and reading comprehension.
A newer category of AI-powered educational tools instead
focuses on communication, its various subskills, and with helping users
organize their thoughts, practice interviews, rehearse presentations, and
improve conversational confidence; all in settings that simulate the real-world
uncertainty and on-the-fly thinking.
Wellspoken, among several other apps, belong to this
emerging category.
And unlike traditional language-learning applications, these
new AI-powered platforms provides simulated conversations and personalized
feedback designed to help users become more articulate, persuasive, and
confident speakers.
"It felt less like homework," Natividad said.
"It felt like having a communication coach available whenever I needed
one."
She began practicing for approximately fifteen to twenty
minutes each evening after dinner.
What started as a small daily habit gradually changed how
she approached conversations outside the app.
Confidence
Opens Doors
Within several months, Natividad noticed she no longer
mentally rehearsed every sentence before speaking, was able to rapidly switch
between topics, tuned inflection to change her accent, and kept pace with her
neighbors and colleagues.
She became more comfortable asking questions during
meetings, participating in discussions, and sharing opinions she once kept to
herself.
Her family noticed the difference before she did.
"My children told me I sounded more confident,"
she said. "They said I finally stopped apologizing every time I
spoke."
Her daughter described the change as one of confidence
rather than capability.
"My mom has always been intelligent," she said.
"The difference now is that people immediately hear the confidence behind
her ideas."
Eventually, Natividad accepted leadership responsibilities
within her local Filipino-American community organization: helping organize
cultural events, coordinate volunteers, and mentor newly arrived immigrants
adapting to their new lives in Arizona.
At a recent community fundraiser, she delivered a speech
before more than one hundred attendees: something she once considered
impossible.
"When people came up afterward to thank me for the
speech," Natividad recalled, "I realized how far I'd come. I feel
more American."
Communication
as an Opportunity
Researchers and workforce experts increasingly recognize
that communication skills play an important role in career advancement
alongside technical ability. The Migration Policy Institute found that workplace-focused
communication instruction can significantly improve immigrants' economic
opportunities by emphasizing practical communication rather than language
acquisition alone [4][5]. Communication affecting everything, from rapport with
fellow colleagues, interactions with clients, and especially promotions.
According to Wellspoken representatives, that philosophy
inspired the platform.
Many members of the company's founding team come from
immigrant families and saw talented people hesitate to pursue promotions,
leadership positions, or public speaking opportunities: not because they lacked
knowledge, but because they lacked confidence expressing it.
"We've met countless people from many different
backgrounds, who are incredibly capable," co-founder Felix Yu said.
"Our mission is to help people communicate with the confidence their
abilities already deserve."
Today, the platform serves students, professionals,
entrepreneurs, healthcare workers, job seekers, and immigrants seeking to
strengthen their communication skills through regular AI-guided practice.
Finding
Her Voice
For Natividad, the journey was never about eliminating her
Filipino accent or changing who she was.
Instead, it was about expressing herself more confidently
while remaining proud of her heritage.
"I'll always be proud of where I came from," she
said. "Wellspoken didn't change who I am. It helped me express who I
am."
As artificial intelligence continues expanding into
education and professional development, communication coaching represents one
of its newest applications. For many users, the goal is not simply speaking
English—but speaking with enough confidence that their ideas are heard.
For Jessica Natividad, that confidence opened doors she once
believed would remain closed.
Early
User Data Suggests Consistent Practice Matters
While Natividad’s experience is anecdotal, early platform
data suggests that consistent practice may be an important predictor of
long-term engagement.
According to Wellspoken, an analysis of approximately 2,100
new users who began practicing in early February found a strong relationship
between first-week consistency and continued usage. Among users who practiced
only one day during their first week, 32% were still practicing at least two
weeks later. That figure rose to 45% for two days, 55% for three days, and 87%
among users who practiced four or more days.
The company also reports strong user sentiment. Among
roughly 3,100 responses to the in-app question "Are daily tasks helping
you stay on track?", 91% answered yes. Separately, AI-generated drill
feedback has received an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 across approximately
6,700 ratings, with 80% awarding either four or five stars.
These figures are based on internal company data and have
not been independently verified.
